Steven Gerrard admits that slip will ‘always hurt’

Chelsea go to Manchester United on Thursday looking to continue what has been a strange end to the season.

The team has an FA Cup final to look forward to in a couple of weeks, although they are out of the Champions League and marooned in third place in the Premier League. As a result, it would be easy for Thomas Tuchel’s team to lose some focus.

The Blues do have a proud recent away record to protect though and United will be wary of that, winning their last eight away fixtures in succession in all competitions. With a stacked squad of talent, players will also be battling for an FA Cup final spot.

Mirror Sport has your latest Blues headlines ahead of a busy few days for the London club.

Warning to owners

The potential new owners of Chelsea have been warned that Champions League qualification is imperative for the team to ensure they don’t spiral like Arsenal.

Following the sanctions imposed on former owner Roman Abramovich, a number of groups are vying to purchase the London club. Three possible options remain and the successful bidder is set to find out next week.

Although the quick change of ownership should prevent serious financial problems for the Blues as a result of the sanctions, vysyble’s John Purcell has said it’s imperative Chelsea now remain a force on the European stage.

“If Chelsea continue to grow their commercial arm they should be OK,” he said. “They have been pretty successful in Europe and that has given them a commercial boost. Europe is crucial.

“We’ve seen what happens if you don’t qualify for Europe with Arsenal in recent years and if you don’t… United have gotten away with it because they have a big worldwide fanbase and a commercial operation but if you’re not in Europe every second year it will start to hurt.”

Tuchel plays down exit talk

Tuchel has dismissed suggestions that he could leave the club in the summer.

The sanctions against the Blues’ former owner Abramovich earlier in the season prompted some thoughts that a number of key figures at the club may be on the move at the end of the campaign, including the manager.

However, Tuchel has said he intends to be in place throughout pre-season and going into what promises to be an intriguing 2022-23 campaign.

“From pre-season next season, we will give our very best, and I will be fully involved with all my heart and all of my knowledge,” he said.

Ba reflects on Gerrard slip

Former Chelsea forward Demba Ba has said he does not feel sorry for Steven Gerrard, having capitalised on the ex-Liverpool skipper’s slip to score eight years ago.

The Reds appeared on course for a shock title success under Brendan Rodgers, but their challenge was derailed at Anfield when a makeshift Chelsea side won 2-0. Ba scored the opening goal after Gerrard lost his footing.

Speaking about the iconic moment eight years on, Ba said moments such as those are part of the game.

“No, not really,” the striker said when asked if he had sympathy for Gerrard. “Because that’s the game. You make errors and others take advantage. What Steven Gerrard has done for the world of football is tremendous. But this is life, unfortunately. Not all stories can end in fairytales.
