Shaheen Holloway taking over at Seton Hall from Saint Peter’s
It will be a greeting healthy for the pope or Elvis, or potentially a mix of the two, when Shaheen Holloway is launched Thursday as Seton Corridor men’s basketball’s head mentor. After the two sides agreed to conditions late Wednesday, the college announced a 1:30 p.m. Thursday news conference.
Beloved as a Seton Corridor point guard and later on affiliate head coach beneath Kevin Willard, Holloway now has nationwide identify recognition following guiding Saint Peter’s to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight — the finest Cinderella run in tourney history.
But the most heartfelt response could appear from individuals who have known him from his earliest days as a Pirate.
“It’s likely to be big,” explained Ty Shine, Holloway’s backup on the 2000 Sweet 16 staff. “Local young children are likely to want to engage in for him. He even now has that legendary New York Town/New Jersey identify. I think the recruiting aspect is going to be pretty simple for him — getting from the spot is going to be a single of his benefits.”
Holloway is very regarded by the metropolitan area’s recruiting electrical power brokers. But to Shine, his return is about additional than opening recruiting pipelines. It is about bleeding blue the way only an alum can.
“It’s usually great to have anyone in-dwelling that cares about the faculty and desires to see the college do properly,” reported Glow. “To go again to your university workforce, proper following the good results you just experienced at a mid-significant, it is a desire. You want to pinch on your own.”

Brian Campbell, who performed on that 2000 workforce, echoed the sentiment.
“I don’t think it could be any better,” Campbell said. “He went to the school, he was an assistant coach there for a lengthy time with good results, he went to Saint Peter’s, which is not an quick position to gain and finished 2nd or third the previous three decades (in the MAAC).”
That last aspect is noteworthy. When evaluating coaches, considerably is manufactured of March runs — and Holloway’s was all-time epic — but catching lightning in a bottle is not as predictive of long run achievements as the full history.
“That’s a league with good coaches and excellent players,” Campbell mentioned of the MAAC. “So a lot is produced of meeting tournaments, but to me, I search at the typical season. If you’re finishing in the leading two or a few for a few years in a row at a spot like Saint Peter’s, you know what you’re undertaking.”
When Willard 1st arrived at Seton Hall in 2010, he was shocked at the lack of infrastructure — facilities, alumni offering, institutional aid. Significantly of that has progressed above the past 12 yrs, but Seton Hall may possibly in no way capture a Marquette or a Creighton in that regard. Campbell thinks no just one is superior positioned to fully grasp that and maximize the scenario than Holloway.
“Seton Corridor will have to do a lot more with significantly less (relative to higher-key friends), and that’s the very same factor with Saint Peter’s,” he reported. “That’s the kind of man we will need. We don’t need to have an assistant from a major plan who will get players based mostly on the application identify or on facilities or household-courtroom benefit.”
Rob Jackson, a Seton Corridor assistant for the duration of Holloway’s playing times who is now an NBA scout, has viewed his increase by way of the coaching ranks closely and remained in contact.
“He’s shown that he can coach on any amount,” Jackson mentioned. “I’ve had a chance to look at him run observe, coach in games and see him out there with his video game planning and educating skills. In apply, the way he is equipped to relate to players and motivate them, that absolutely is just one of his strengths. I truly do not think he’ll miss out on a conquer.”
Jackson claimed he could convey to from early on that Holloway could increase to meet any obstacle.
“I was so impressed with Shaheen remaining a youthful father, a school basketball participant and a school university student, and how he was equipped to fit every little thing on his plate and get by means of it the way he did,” he mentioned. “It was not straightforward, but he did a great work.”
