West Ham vs Lyon LIVE: Europa League result, final score and reaction – Ndombele equalises after Bowen opener

To many West Ham fans, this Europa League quarter-final tie with Lyon looked set to be the French connection between a surreal slaying of Sevilla in the last 16 and a semi-final against Barcelona or Frankfurt. It may yet prove to be just that, but based on the evidence of this turbulent first-leg draw, it will be no French dispatch.

The east London air carried a gentle chill and was laced with a distinct dose of expectation as West Ham fans filled their stadium on this early spring evening, with the pre-match rendition of “Bubbles” emitting undertones of belief rather than the almost audible hope that characterised the anthem ahead of the second-leg home win against Sevilla.

While the noise produced by the home supporters seemed to verge on crossing a dangerous decibel count at times, the small contingent of travelling Lyon fans bounced and sang throughout, hoping their own gathering would upstage any party planned by the Premier League side.

Jarrod Bowen has become the first West Ham player to score 10 home goals in a single season in all competitions since Marlon Harewood in 2005-06.

Two of the other three Europa League quarter-finals also ended in 1-1 draws. Eintracht Frankfurt drew at home to Barcelona and RB Leipzig couldn’t get past Atalanta.

The final game saw Sporting Braga defeat Rangers 1-0 at home. All the semi-final spots are still up for grabs heading into the second legs next Thursday.

90+8 mins: Tete goes down in the West Ham box and begs for a penalty that doesn’t come. The ball goes out of play and the full-time whistle goes. West Ham secure a draw after playing the entire second half with 10-men. They’ll go to France next week on level terms.

90+6 mins: A Lyon throw in comes to Aouar who slides it over to Gusto on the right wing. He flicks a good cross into the box and picks out Dembele but the forward can only whip his header over the crossbar!

90+3 mins: The ball gets crossed into the box from the left side and almost falls for Dembele but Rice is back to boot it clear. West Ham keep defenders in the box as Lyon stick to their task before a headed effort loops up and gets claimed by Areola.

90 mins: Eight minutes of added time to play! It’s not really surprising, there’s been bitty stoppages all over the place as well as pitch invaders and head collisions.

Ryan Fredericks is sporting a nice bruise on the side of his head where he has hit earlier on and Craig Dawson’s nose is starting to swell.

89 mins: Antonio is shown a yellow card for a sliding tackle on Aouar.

There’s another stoppage after Dawson and Paqueta clash heads in the West Ham box. Expect a fair chunk of added time to be issued.

86 mins: West Ham sweep up the pitch after some good work from Bowen to win the ball in midfield. He gives it to Antonio who carries it to the box before getting some help from Rice. It’s a good position for the Irons to mount an attack into the box but a supporter storms the pitch and the game gets stopped. What an idiot.

83 mins: Chance! West Ham commit men up the pitch as Bowen and Soucek combine to get the ball into the penalty area. The Hammers are still trying to win this game.

Bowen’s cross comes to Lopes who sends the visitors flying up the pitch. Dembele slots the ball across to Ekambi who shoots and fires his effort high and wide.
